What Is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation is the dysfunction of the melanocyte cell. When this cell is not functioning as it is supposed to it begins to sporadically produce pigment and dump it into the epidermis.

Over time this pigment makes its way up the layers of the skin making itself visible as brown spots or freckling. This type of pigmentation is typically caused by overexposure to the sun.

Pigmentation caused by medications and hormone changes is known as Melasma/Chloasma, these triggers have a similar effect on the melanocyte cell however once this cell begins to dysfunction the pigment is instead embedded deep into the basal cell layer, appearing in large symmetrical patches usually on the forehead and cheeks. This type of pigment cannot be removed and over lightened and managed overtime with non light based therapies.
